Bin Laden, as medieval ideologist and global terrorist, had a record of accomplishment that was as vast as it was hideous. He did more to slash the fabric of American life than anyone since the Second World War. […] He forced the rise of expensive structures of security and surveillance. Dieses Video habe ich mir heute morgen im Bett angeschaut — auf dem iPad. Während die Kinder und Männer auf dem Khyber-Pass wohl wie jeden Morgen wieder einmal dutzende von Pistolen, Gewehren und tonnenweise Munition hergestellt haben:
Khyber-Pass — das Paradies für Anhänger der NRA. Und Terroristen. Und sogenannten „Selbstverteidiger“.

There is no resistance. Nobody thinks anymore, they just follow silly rules and procedures. I was just on a trip outside the US with a group of older people. We traveled around other countries with no problem. But coming back to the US was a hassle. They carefully searched all these old people…as if they really thought these folks posed a threat to homeland security.

Auch das gehört zu der Asymmetrie des Konflikts: dass man Menschen, die den Tod mehr als das Leben lieben, nicht abschrecken kann, indem man ihnen die Todesstrafe androht. Die einzige Möglichkeit, potentielle Märtyrer wie den jungen, im Wohlstand aufgewachsenen Nigerianer von ihren Mordplänen abzubringen, wäre wohl, ihnen zu versprechen, dass im Falle eines Misslingens alles getan würde, um sie am Leben zu erhalten: in einem Gefängnis mit Frauen als Aufseherinnen, die nur aus Schweinefleisch zubereitete Gerichte servieren, während im anstaltseigenen Fernsehen Videoclips von Russ Meyer und Reden von Geert Wilders als Dauerschleife laufen.

When people are scared, they need something done that will make them feel safe, even if it doesn’t truly make them safer. Politicians naturally want to do something in response to crisis, even if that something doesn’t make any sense.
[…] Despite fearful rhetoric to the contrary, terrorism is not a transcendent threat. A terrorist attack cannot possibly destroy a country’s way of life; it’s only our reaction to that attack that can do that kind of damage. The more we undermine our own laws, the more we convert our buildings into fortresses, the more we reduce the freedoms and liberties at the foundation of our societies, the more we’re doing the terrorists‘ job for them.

Danke, Jon Stewart (geborener Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz und somit völlig unverdächtig, einen inneren Groll gegen Israel zu hegen), für die neutrale Berichterstattung. Aber vielleicht hat er Unrecht und die US-amerikanischen Politiker vollkommen recht. Vielleicht sollten wir alle anfangen, ein „little bit fascist“ (ab 0:50) zu werden – hat noch niemandem geschadet:
Wenn es nicht andauernd so viele Tote geben würde, könnte man meinen, die beiden Völker lebten „nur“ in einer zerrütteten Ehe:
