Practically every day we get a new report stating this or that economic reading increased or declined by some insignificant amount. Then the total change from the past recession or last year is calculated and a “worst since” (i.e. – worst since 1997, the Great Depression, Carter Administration, etc.) headline is created.

And the poor Japanese have been waiting 19 years to get to the beginning of the end of their restructuring crisis. They probably would have gotten to it years ago, were it not for the diligent efforts of Japanese politicians. Instead of letting the banks fail, they bailed them out and propped them up. Result: an on-again, off-again depression that has lasted longer than most marriages.

It was determined a half century ago that home ownership was a good thing. Since then, the government has bent the rules in favor of the homeowner – with artificially low mortgage rates…and substantial tax benefits. As an unforeseen consequence, the feds helped create the biggest mortgage-backed credit bubble in history. Not only that, they changed to geography of America – with vast suburbs stretching out in all directions, rather than cheaper and more efficient tightly packed apartment buildings.

Wer seine Sitzplätze im Kino auch 2009 noch per Telefon reserviert, hat nichts anderers verdient, als kräftig zur Kasse gebeten zu werden.
Ich kann mich jedenfalls nicht erinnern, wann ich das letzte Mal per Telefon eine Reservierung getätigt habe – es muss ungefähr so 1998 gewesen sein. Meine Billets ordere ich mittlerweile per Internet, bezahle sie mit Kreditkarte und drucke sie dann auf meinem Drucker aus. Einfacher geht es ja wohl kaum!

Der chinesische Premierminister Wen Jiabao soll sich auch in Davos keinesfalls an Tibet erinnern müssen: Die Kantonspolizei Graubünden hat in einem Geschäft für Geschenke an der Promenade eine tibetische Flagge beschlagnahmt.

Da arbeiten überall dieselben Tölpel, die bei der Schulung über Menschen- und Freiheitsrechte offensichtlich geschwänzt haben.
Es gibt bei weitem gröbere Probleme in unserem Land, die unsere Polizei lösen muss – und nur die Polizei lösen darf! Aber äbe: Lieber wehrlose Fahnen jagen als sich in Lebensgefahr begeben und wahre Kriminelle stellen.

The Government’s bail-out of the banks in October with £37 billion of taxpayers‘ money was supposed to have „saved the world“, according to the PM, but now it is clear that it has not even saved the banks. Our money kept the show on the road for only three months.

In Vereinigten Königreich ist mit Premierminister Gordon Brown immerhin diejenige Person am Ruder, die in den 10 Jahren vor Stellenantritt das Finanzministerium unter sich hatte – und am ganzen Schlammassel dementsprechend mitgearbeitet hat (Stichwort „cheap money“).
