Steuerzahler muss Kummerbanken stützen

Die Liste der strauchelnden Banken wird immer grösser – der europäische Kontinent ist längst erreicht. Was mit Northern Rock in Grossbritannien begann, hat sich über Deutschland (IKB und neu BayernLB) in die Schweiz (UBS) nach Frankreich (Société Générale) fortgepflanzt (Liechtenstein ist anderweitig betroffen). Heute in den Medien:

Wunderbar. Ich kann mir keinen besseren Einsatzzweck für meine hart verdienten Steuergelder vorstellen als zur Rettung von Banken.

Immerhin beruhigt es, dass es in der Schweiz – abgesehen von der „bestgeführten Bank der Welt“ mit ein paar Milliärdchen – noch zu keinen Kollateralschäden gekommen ist.

Kollabieren kommende Woche auch noch die us-amerikanischen „Monoliner“, schaltet die Finanz-Party einen Gang höher.

TDR über Northern Rock:

British taxpayers are now the proud owners of a bank they’ve already loaned more than 55 billion pounds to. […]

Darling justified the move by adding that, “It is better for the Government to hold on to Northern Rock for a temporary period and as and when market conditions improve, the value of Northern Rock will grow and therefore the taxpayer will gain. The long-term ownership of this bank must lie in the private sector.”

Right. Who wants to own a bank that borrows money at long-term rates in order to lend it short-term to people who can’t repay it?
