Maxtor-Platten Low Level formatieren

If all Americans could compare Berlin’s luxurious central train station today with the grimy, decrepit Penn Station in New York City, they would swear we were the ones who lost World War II.

Looking at the evidence, Harvard’s polymath professor Steven Pinker has ventured to speculate that we are probably living „in the most peaceful time of our species‘ existence.“

Why does it not feel that way? Why do we think we live in scary times? Part of the problem is that as violence has been ebbing, information has been exploding.

The world has shifted from anti-Americanism to post-Americanism.

Riecht ihr das Startup?

One guy, I think it was TechCrunch’s Ouriel Ohayon, said he likes to visit startups to “smell the startup.” […]

Other journalists have told me they get nervous about a company if they claim to be a software house, yet there are too many “pretty people” running around. Engineers are rarely pretty. Or, if they are too scripted. Or if they have ostentatious offices. Startups should be in pretty cheap surroundings.

[…] back to the smell of the startup. The offices were in a low-cost place. They had what looked like used furniture. Clearly no expense had been overdone. And the people we met were geeky, passionate, and not very good on camera. Makes my job a little tougher, but tells me that we were in front of the real deal, not some dance and pony show. Funny, the same CEO even does his own videos on its Web site, along with the same cruddy furniture.

Then there’s our building. Steve Jobs basically designed this building. In the center, he created this big atrium area, which seems initially like a waste of space. The reason he did it was that everybody goes off and works in their individual areas. People who work on software code are here, people who animate are there, and people who do designs are over there. Steve put the mailboxes, the meetings rooms, the cafeteria, and, most insidiously and brilliantly, the bathrooms in the center — which initially drove us crazy — so that you run into everybody during the course of a day. [Jobs] realized that when people run into each other, when they make eye contact, things happen. So he made it impossible for you not to run into the rest of the company.

The world’s largest shit-magnet

Risk, as a pure abstraction unconnected to any real capital activity, is all that’s left to buy and sell after all other plausibly practical vehicles for finance have failed. […]

One feature of the risk economy is the Federal Reserve’s new willingness to absorb any sort of crap collateral in exchange for massive cheap loans to insolvent companies and institutions. The Fed has, in effect, made itself the world’s largest financial shit-magnet.

Haushaltsbudgets werden eingeschränkt

While Rebecca, aged 10, is worried about the rising cost of food and utility bills: ‚We won’t be able to buy as much. Something should be done about this.‘

Wieso sollte jemand etwas dagegen tun?

Originally uploaded by emeidi

Holidaymakers are being warned that this will be the summer of the surcharge, as airlines, cruise operators and package holiday companies struggle to shore up their profit margins. […]

However, at least 19 tour operators have now invoked clauses in their small print which allow them to add ‚late notice fees‘ of up to 10 per cent of the full holiday price, provided they do so more than 30 days prior to departure. Firms adding fees include Just Sardinia, Discover the World and Solmar Villas.

Next came the Bush bubbles—in housing, equity funds, commercial real estate, and hedge funds that have been deflating while threatening to destroy altogether the economic viability of what was once the world’s greatest industrial democracy.

After this, the only bubble left for an economy that appears to be entering terminal depression may be the current fuel/food bubble that could result in the starvation of millions worldwide.

Arbeiten oder Geld verdienen?

Abe Lincoln:

„Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration.“

Ach was – heute verdient man Geld, indem man Geld investiert und verspekuliert.

Wer also wieder mal schmunzeln möchte – nume hü!

Pepys was captivated by the familiar but pernicious notion that, instead of working for a living, a person could have his money “work for him.” Aristotle had spoken against this concept 2,000 years earlier: “The most hated sort of wealth getting and with the greatest reason, is usury, which makes a gain out of money itself and not from the natural object of it. For money was intended to be used in exchange but not to increase at interest. And this term interest, which means the birth of money from money is applied to the breeding of money because the offspring resembles the parent. Wherefore of all modes of getting wealth, this is the most unnatural.” (1258b Politics)
