MIGROS‘ Logistik macht auf Ameise
Link zu diesem Artikel
Migros, a Swiss supermarket chain, and Barilla, Italy’s leading pasta-maker, both manage their daily deliveries from central warehouses to local retailers using AntRoute. This is a piece of software developed by AntOptima, a spin-off from the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Lugano (IDSIA), one of Europe’s leading centres for swarm intelligence. Every morning the software’s “ants” calculate the best routes and delivery sequences, depending on the quantity of cargo, its destinations, delivery windows and available lorries. According to Luca Gambardella, the director of both IDSIA and AntOptima, it takes 15 minutes to produce a delivery plan for 1,200 trucks, even though the plan changes almost every day.

Mathematica — noch so eine eierlegende Wollmilchsau?!
Link zu diesem Artikel
By far my #1 tool is Mathematica. Which, of course, I built so I could have it to use! These days I use it not just to compute, but also to keep notes, to create presentations, and to do all sorts of other things.

Each app’s a joy to use precisely because it’s built from scratch to solve certain problems real people have in a certain context — not to do everything for everyone and certainly not to fit into a “Suite” that was invented by some white-toothed Stanford grad who knows each app’s “Features & Benefits” bullets better than the needs of its battlefield users.

LSE powered by Microsoft … er … Windows … er … .NET … er … SQL Server
Link zu diesem Artikel
Was kommt raus, wenn Microsoft zusammen mit einem Beratungsunternehmen Software schreibt?
Anyone who was ever fool enough to believe that Microsoft software was good enough to be used for a mission-critical operation had their face slapped this September when the LSE (London Stock Exchange)’s Windows-based TradElect system brought the market to a standstill for almost an entire day. […]
TradElect runs on HP ProLiant servers running, in turn, Windows Server 2003. The TradElect software itself is a custom blend of C# and .NET programs, which was created by Microsoft and Accenture, the global consulting firm. On the back-end, it relied on Microsoft SQL Server 2000. Its goal was to maintain sub-ten millisecond response times, real-time system speeds, for stock trades.
[…] the LSE’s competition […] was able to deliver that level of performance and in general it was running rings about TradElect. Three guesses what MarketPrizm runs on and the first two don’t count. The answer is Linux.
[…] I can only wonder how many other Windows enterprise software failures are kept hidden away within IT departments by companies unwilling to reveal just how foolish their decisions to rely on archaic, cranky Windows software solutions have proven to be.
I’m sure the LSE management couldn’t tell Linux from Windows without a techie at hand. They can tell, however, when their business comes to a complete stop in front of the entire world.

Office 2010 – eine Totgeburt?
Link zu diesem Artikel
I think this stems from a corporate culture that is unable to say no to anything. Office has a bazillion features, and no doubt is being marketing-driven to add a few thousand more to justify the upgrade to 2010. Everyone has a particular way that they use Office, and they are literally trying to accommodate every possible layout or customization that anyone has ever wanted in the history of time. They are terrified that someone is going to stop using Office (as if they had a choice) because they couldn’t position their three delete buttons just so. It’s madness.

Adobe rechtfertigt seine Installer-Hölle (nicht)
Link zu diesem Artikel
One could argue that Adobe should make simpler products that don’t require such complex package management. While such an approach is appealing, it would also cripple some of the features which make Adobe’s products so compelling. This is particularly true for features that function across the various products within the Creative Suite.

Ungenügend, setzen!
Für mich ist das keine vernünftige Argumentation gegen einen einfachen Installer, viel eher nichtssagend-fluffige Marketing-Sprache:
[…] it would also cripple some of the features which make Adobe’s products so compelling.

Ah yes, of course. It is common knowledge that Safari is an Adobe application and that it cannot be running while Adobe is installing its new stuff. Besides, who on earth would want to read a few web pages while the Adobe CS4 installer is doing its thing in the background? It’ll only take half an hour! Might as well sit back and enjoy the show.
