Now you have the goofy situation where a government pay Czar is intervening to cut executive salaries at those firms by 90%. If the government hadn’t intervened in the first place, the salaries would have been cut by 100% and the bad bets by the firms would have been written off and the economy would be closer to recovery.

„One of the best pieces of advice Mickey ever gave us was to go rent a warehouse and build a prototype of a store, and not, you know, just design it, go build 20 of them, then discover it didn’t work,“ says Jobs. In other words, design it as you would a product. Apple Store Version 0.0 took shape in a warehouse near the Apple campus. „Ron and I had a store all designed,“ says Jobs, when they were stopped by an insight: The computer was evolving from a simple productivity tool to a „hub“ for video, photography, music, information, and so forth. The sale, then, was less about the machine than what you could do with it. But looking at their store, they winced. The hardware was laid out by product category – in other words, by how the company was organized internally, not by how a customer might actually want to buy things. […]
‚Tell us about the best service experience you’ve ever had.'“ Of the 18 people, 16 said it was in a hotel. This was unexpected. But of course: The concierge desk at a hotel isn’t selling anything; it’s there to help. „We said, ‚Well, how do we create a store that has the friendliness of a Four Seasons Hotel?'“ The answer: „Let’s put a bar in our stores. But instead of dispensing alcohol, we dispense advice.“

So sei etwa bei Kopfsalat die Jahreszeit, in der er angebaut werde, der ausschlaggebende Klimafaktor. Regionaler Salat liege dann in der Klimabilanz vorn, wenn er im Frühjahr oder Sommer angebaut werde.
Anlässlich einer Zivilschutzübung konnte ich kürzlich mit einem Gärtnereibetreiber sprechen. Dabei kam heraus, dass er das Jahr hindurch um die 40’000 Liter Heizöl benötige, um seine Gewächshäuser im Winter warm zu halten. Zum Vergleich: Für ein Einfamilienhaus rechnet man mit einem Verbrauch von 3’000 Litern Heizöl — pro Jahr.
Kein Wunder, sind Gärtner mit Gewächshäusern eine der ersten Gruppen, die einen rasch ansteigenden Heizölpreis spüren.

Microsoft kann meinetwegen den physischen Aufbau der Apple Stores 1:1 kopieren – wer auf den Tresen dann aber nur Müll aus dem letzten Jahrhundert stehen hat, schliesst seine Läden in wenigen Jahren wieder. Hoffentlich für immer.

Bribes, corruption and bureaucracy are part of the culture. But it’s also part of what makes Mumbai work. „This is a ‚make do‘ city,“ our travel compatriot Chris Mayer observed while we were driving around the city shooting video for a documentary short we hope to produce on the opportunities in the Indian market. We’d stopped in front of the state Police Headquarters for Maharashtra. It’s a formidable colonial era building. But apparently they don’t like you taking pictures… or stopping at all… in front of the building. An angry police officer began yelling at our driver in Hindi. Several officers carrying impressive weapons were standing behind him. […] Later we learned a quick 100-rupee note had saved us from a trip inside the police headquarters, rather than just gawking at its façade.

Als ich im Frühjahr 2009 ebenfalls in Mumbai mein photographisches Unwesen trieb, gerieten wir um ein Haar in dieselbe Situation: Als ich vis-a-vis des Bahnhofs Churchgate ein Strassenschild photographierte, sah uns ein Uniformierter böse an, rief uns zu sich, konnte sich dann aber in Englisch nicht ausdrücken. Zuerst hatten wir keine Ahnung, was er uns mitteilen wollte, bis uns langsam dämmerte, dass wir hier wohl nur heil rauskommen würden, wenn ich das soeben geschossene Foto des Strassenschildes vor seinen Augen löschte … Und tatsächlich funktionierte es. Irgendwie war er hin- und hergerissen, ob er die weissen Touristen jetzt festnehmen und einen Zusammenschiss seines Vorgesetzten riskieren sollte, oder aber ob er sich an uns sein Monatseinkommen aufbessern könnte. Da es nichts zu diskutieren gab, traten wir nach einigen Schrecksekunden den Rückzug an und wurden nicht weiter behelligt.

Um den 27″ iMac als zweites Display für einen beliebigen weiteren Mac (mit Mini-DisplayPort) zu nutzen, bedarf es eines entsprechenden Kabels, welches Belkin liefert:
Wie geil ist das denn? Aber in der Tat wäre dies ein etwas teurer Zweitbildschirm, zumal er mit allerlei Hochtechnologie gefüllt ist.

How did Microsoft find itself a leader in nothing and playing catch-up on every front — in MP3 players, on the cloud, in search. How did Amazon roll out S3 and not Microsoft? How did Google control the search market? How did Apple take over online music retailing and MP3 hardware? How did Microsoft let that market for smartphones get away from them? How is it that everything about Microsoft’s business is backward looking? This is the real problem they have now. They’re fighting wars that are already over. They’re investing huge energy into defending things they already control, like Windows. As they do this, as they put so much effort into lost causes like search (Bing v. Google) they keep missing out on new things. So their problems just keep getting bigger and bigger, like a snowball rolling down a hill.

Only problem is we’re all very bad at something, which we may or may not be aware of. It may be graphic design. Maybe finance. Or managing a group of people to get them to do what you want. What do we do then?
The simple answer is to improve. We’re so bad at this skill that if we work at it, we can improve it and it will be better. And that’s often a good idea.
The better idea is to delegate: find someone who’s a rock star at that skill you suck so badly at. But to do that, you have to trust that others an help you. Which is difficult since you’re a control freak, remember?

Vor Kurzem habe ich an einem anderen Ort über die eigenen Schwächen gelesen. Das Fazit lautete: Ein Mensch profitiert in der heutigen arbeitsteiligen Welt deutlich mehr, wenn er seine Stärken weiter ausbaut, als wenn er seine Schwächen auf’s Mittelmass zu heben versucht. Zeitverschwendung, sozusagen.

This year, several BlitzTalks were presented. These talks are five minutes long and have 20 slides, auto-advancing every 15 seconds. It is fair to say that the BlitzTalks stole the show and were very appreciated by the audience. It was obvious that a lot of craftmanship went into each of those bite-sized talks.

Nette Idee! Sollte auch für studentische Präsentationen an der Uni Einzug halten. Selbstverständlich nicht für alles und jenes – aber es wäre auf jeden Falle eine Herausforderung.
