Gestern durfte ich wieder einmal zum treffendsten Zeitpunkt meine Kenntnisse als PC-Supporter ausspielen, als nämlich ein Laptop nach dem Aufstarten zwar kurz ein Bildsignal an den Beamer übermittelte, nach etwa 30 Sekunden aber das Signal verloren ging.
Wie sich herausstellen sollte, übernahm zu diesem Zeitpunkt der Nvidia Grafiktreiber die Kontrolle über das Display, wobei der Treiber leider auf „einfachen Monitorbetrieb“ eingestellt war. Wieso der Treiber auch gleich die Fn+F3-Tastenkombination deaktivierte, um auf Beamerbetrieb umzuschalten, blieb mir schleierhaft.
Diese glimpflich abgelaufene „Panne“ nutze ich nun dazu, meine seit Jahren gereifte Vorstellungen eines tubelisicheren „Beamers“ darzulegen. Dessen Eigenschaften sind folgende:
Video-Eingänge Das Gerät weist genau einen Eingang für Video-Signale auf – und zwar VGA. Ich frage mich heute noch, welcher Beamer jemals ein Kabel an Cinch-, DVI- und Weiss-nicht-was-für-komische-Eingänge es noch gibt gesehen hat. Als Hilfe für die unbedarften Endanwender könnte man sich überlegen, Beamerseitig einen speziellen VGA-Anschluss einzubauen, damit das Kabel nur auf einen bestimmten Weg angesteckt werden kann.
Downscaling Egal, welche Auflösung das Computer-Signal aufweist — das Gerät skaliert dieses automatisch auf die Standard-Auflösung herunter. Eventuell begleitet mit einem Warnhinweis, die Auflösung auf dem Computer herunterzuschraben.
Autosensing Die Elektronik des Beamers merkt, a) an welchen Anschlüssen ein Kabel hängt und b) auf welchem Kabel auch wirklich ein Signal übermittelt wird.
Knöpfe Es gibt zwei Knöpfe: „An/Aus“ sowie „Schwarz“
Eingebaute Hilfe Läuft trotz diesen Vereinfachungen etwas schief, bietet der Beamer automatisch eine intelligente Hilfe-Funktion an.

Microsoft kann meinetwegen den physischen Aufbau der Apple Stores 1:1 kopieren – wer auf den Tresen dann aber nur Müll aus dem letzten Jahrhundert stehen hat, schliesst seine Läden in wenigen Jahren wieder. Hoffentlich für immer.
Um den 27″ iMac als zweites Display für einen beliebigen weiteren Mac (mit Mini-DisplayPort) zu nutzen, bedarf es eines entsprechenden Kabels, welches Belkin liefert:
How did Microsoft find itself a leader in nothing and playing catch-up on every front — in MP3 players, on the cloud, in search. How did Amazon roll out S3 and not Microsoft? How did Google control the search market? How did Apple take over online music retailing and MP3 hardware? How did Microsoft let that market for smartphones get away from them? How is it that everything about Microsoft’s business is backward looking? This is the real problem they have now. They’re fighting wars that are already over. They’re investing huge energy into defending things they already control, like Windows. As they do this, as they put so much effort into lost causes like search (Bing v. Google) they keep missing out on new things. So their problems just keep getting bigger and bigger, like a snowball rolling down a hill.
