people started sending Linus money directly. I’m not sure they did it out of gratitude, however, since they usually sent personal checks from the US. As Linus quickly learned, Finnish banks really, really hate checks. Especially personal checks. Particularly personal checks from the US. They invent all sorts of bureaucratic pit-falls and rules and fees to make it difficult and expensive to use checks. If you want to make trouble for a Finn, send him a personal check from the US. And that’s not a joke.

„The gaokao rewards a special type of student: very strong memory; very strong logical and analytical ability; little imagination; little desire to question authority,“ says Jiang Xueqin, a Yale-educated school administrator in Beijing. „That person does well on the gaokao–as well as on the SAT, by the way.“

A popular joke about CCTV is that the first 10 minutes of the news focus on Chinese officials being very busy; the second 10 are about how Chinese people are very happy; the last 10 report how foreigners have tragic lives.

If I were in charge at HP, the TouchPad would have been sold for $99, but you’d have needed to buy red, green and blue pixel cartridges every few months for $19 each.

Most advertisers want people to buy their product, i.e. pay for it. When an app (on any platform) is free and sponsored by ads, a large portion of its user base will be people who want something for free. If we’re allowed to generalize here, they don’t want to pay if they can avoid it.
