Adobe Source Code Pro: Quelloffene Programmierer-Schrift

Adobe überrascht für einmal und offeriert mit Source Code Pro eine quelloffene OTF-Schrift, welche speziell für Entwickler geeignet ist, welche eine leicht lesbare Monospace-Schriftart benötigen.
Wer das Ding kompilieren möchte, kann sich an Adobes Git-Repository vergnügen:

Nicht mit Apple Terminal
Leider unterstützt Apples Terminal.app unter Mac OS X 10.7 keine OTF-Fonts:
Terminal.app won’t display OpenType fonts (.otf)
Mist! Dann verwende ich die Schrift halt nur in TextMate … Als Ersatz kommt in Terminal.app Microsofts Consolas zum Einsatz.

Wenn Safari plötzlich keine PDFs mehr speichern will …

Da habe ich also vor einer Weile mein MacBook Air auf Mac OS X Lion 10.7 gehievt und kämpfte seit einiger Zeit damit, dass Safari mir das Speichern jedes beliebigen PDFs verweigerte (sowohl mittels Apfel-S als auch über File > Save As…):
Als ich dem Problem vor einigen Tagen endlich ein für allemal auf den Grund gehen wollte, realisierte ich rasch einmal, dass nicht etwa Safaris native PDF-Vorschau aktiviert war, sondern das von Adobe Reader hinter meinem Rücken installierte Plugin.
Obwohl Adobe in seiner Knowledgebase aufzeigt, wie man das Plugin deaktiviert, war dies bei mir schlicht nicht möglich, weil die entsprechende Checkbox ausgegraut war:
Adobe erwähnt das Problem freundlicherweise in ihrer Knowledgebase (statt das Problem zu flicken, typisch!). Deshalb musste ich mit Handarbeit und dem Terminal hinter die Sache:
# rm -rf "/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin"

Dann noch Safari neu starten, und die PDFs wurden wieder wie gewohnt mit Safari angezeigt — und konnten so problemlos mittels Apfel-S irgendwo auf die Festplatte gesichert werden.

Pixelmator fehlt “Copy Merged” — ein Workaround

In einem Bilddokument, bestehend aus mehreren Layern, möchte man eine Auswahl kopieren, dabei aber nicht nur die Bitmap-Daten des aktuellen Layers mitnehmen, sondern die Ansicht aller Layer kombiniert. In Adobe Photoshop heisst die Funktion “Copy Merged”. Leider fehlt diese in Pixelmator (noch). Hier ein Workaround:
Create a slice in the area you want to copy.
In the dialog with the slice info, drag the thumbnail to your desktop. It will now be a stand-alone image of the merged content, which you can drag & drop into your current or a different Pixelmator document. Still quite a workaround, but it’s substantially faster with a large file than copying and merging layers.

If you’re running a multimillion dollar business, as I assume most of these agencies’ clients are, why would you trust your marketing and advertising to a company that still, three years after its introduction, can’t design for the mobile computing device that dominates the popular discourse?

Wäre ja auch komisch gewesen, wenn Bloatware-Firmen wie Adobe sowas hingekriegt hätten … RIP, Flash. An alle Passanten: Geht weiter, die Show ist vorbei. Wir haben wichtigeres zu tun als auf Flash für das iPhone zu warten. Zum selben Schluss kommt auch Avram Piltch:
More importantly, Adobe needs to have a better answer to whether or not Flash is still relevant in a world where other technologies have rapidly started displacing it. Based on my early experience with Flash Player 10.1 for mobile, it could soon join the floppy drive in the tech graveyard, something else Steve Jobs helped kill.

Mathematica — noch so eine eierlegende Wollmilchsau?!

By far my #1 tool is Mathematica. Which, of course, I built so I could have it to use! These days I use it not just to compute, but also to keep notes, to create presentations, and to do all sorts of other things.

Ich habe Mathematica zwar noch nie benutzt, mit dieser Aussage ist es aber schnurstracks in diejenige Kopf-Schublade gewandert, in welcher auch Microsoft Office und Adobe-Produkte rumlungern. Deren Gemeinsamkeit: Bloatware mit akuter Featurities.

In addition, Flash has not performed well on mobile devices. We have routinely asked Adobe to show us Flash performing well on a mobile device, any mobile device, for a few years now. We have never seen it. Adobe publicly said that Flash would ship on a smartphone in early 2009, then the second half of 2009, then the first half of 2010, and now they say the second half of 2010. We think it will eventually ship, but we’re glad we didn’t hold our breath. Who knows how it will perform?

Helvetica wird unter Windows hässlich gerendert

Heute habe ich ein Bildschirmfoto einer von mir entwickelten Web-Site zugeschickt erhalten — und musste mich angesichts des Font-Renderings fast übergeben. Wie sich nach einigen Nachforschungen herausgestellt hat, ist auf dem System des Kunden ein Helvetica-Paket in Form von TrueType-Schriften installiert. Diese Schriftart wird nun aber sowohl im Internet Explorer als auch im Firefox bei kleinen Schriftgrössen äusserst hässlich gerendert; sprich beispielsweise stimmt das Kerning bei “de” und ähnlichen Buchstabenkombinationen nicht.
Wieso?
Helvetica is easily my favorite font, but it has one downside: it looks like crap on Windows. The way Windows handles the rendering of Helvetica makes a great font almost unreadable at small sizes.

Offensichtlich kommt Helvetica ohne anständiges Hinting daher.
Die Lösung ist relativ simpel. Man nehme das Stylesheet und passe es dermassen an, dass anstelle von Helvetica nur noch Helvetica Neue gewählt wird, die auf Windows-PCs in 99 Prozent der Fälle nicht installiert ist. Stattdessen wird bei Windows-Computern dann einfach die gute, alte (und im Grunde hässliche) Arial verwendet. Konkret:
