Nothing too exciting happens here, though the oddness of King George comes shining through in a brief moment of courtly bizarreness during Adams’ official introduction, and the use of Handel’s Sarabande (most notably utilized in the opening and closing credits of Stanley Kubrick’s oft overlooked masterpiece Barry Lyndon) was sublime.
Die kalten und dunklen Dezember- und Januartage nutze ich derzeit dazu, um einige DVDs zu schauen, die ich mir in den letzten Wochen geleistet habe. Unter anderem die Kubrick-Collection (mit ebendiesem Barry Lyndon) und die Box der HBO-Miniserie John Adams, welche ich aus dem Vereinigten Königreich importieren musste (wurde kürzlich auf SF2 gezeigt).
Ich darf sagen, dass Kubrick mit Barry Lyndon zum ersten Mal mein Interesse für klassische Musik geweckt hat (der Soundtrack von A Clockwork Orange ist übrigens auch sehr einprägsam, wenn auch nicht klassischer Natur). Umso erstaunter war ich, als ich die Sarabande einige Wochen später in der vierten Folge von John Adams („Reunion“) erneut zu hören bekam:
Einerseits könnte es Tom Hoopers Hommage an Kubrick sein — ich empfand die Verwendung des Stücks primär aber als einfallslose Kopie eines mittelmässigen Regisseurs. Ausserdem bin ich von der Kameraführung Hoopers überhaupt nicht überzeugt. Viele Einstellungen erinnerten an die billige Batman & Robin-Serie aus den 1960ern, wo bei Kämpfen mit den Gegnern die Kameras immer einen gewissen Neigungswinkel aufwiesen …
Auch das gehört zu der Asymmetrie des Konflikts: dass man Menschen, die den Tod mehr als das Leben lieben, nicht abschrecken kann, indem man ihnen die Todesstrafe androht. Die einzige Möglichkeit, potentielle Märtyrer wie den jungen, im Wohlstand aufgewachsenen Nigerianer von ihren Mordplänen abzubringen, wäre wohl, ihnen zu versprechen, dass im Falle eines Misslingens alles getan würde, um sie am Leben zu erhalten: in einem Gefängnis mit Frauen als Aufseherinnen, die nur aus Schweinefleisch zubereitete Gerichte servieren, während im anstaltseigenen Fernsehen Videoclips von Russ Meyer und Reden von Geert Wilders als Dauerschleife laufen.

Coming right to the point, the fixers face not just one crisis, but many. They have a growth model that no longer works. They have aging populations and social welfare obligations that can’t be met. They have limits on available resources, including the most basic ones – land, water, and energy. They have a money system headed for a crack-up, and an economic theory that was only effective when it wasn’t necessary. Now that it is needed, the Keynesian fix is useless. If a recovery depends on borrowed money, what do you do when lenders won’t give you any?
